It seems like the Ottawa University Football season ended not too long ago and now we are just under two months away from training camps in the KCAC opening up. What a season the Braves had and now the hard part…repeating. Will they repeat their 11 and 1 mark from the 2009 campaign? My answer to the question is probably not. Does that mean they can’t do it again? No. What it does mean is that there’s a huge target on the back of the yellow and gold in the KCAC with two of the conference power houses also looking to find their way back to the top.
Let’s be honest, Friends was embarrassed on the last day of the regular season on their home turf by Ottawa University and the Braves exercised the demons at Sterling last season. Both of those two teams expected to either be the conference champions or at least representing the KCAC in the NAIA playoffs last season. Neither did. It was O-U along with a surprising McPherson Bulldog team that went to the National Tournament. What am I getting at? It’s not going to be a cake walk as those two teams are looking to find their way back to the top. Also add to that fact that the Braves will be without Ethan Haller who broke school records at quarterback, Corey Schultz who also set records at Wide Receiver, Tight End Taylor Burnett, Defensive End Jamison Shaw, Running Back Andy Otto and the list goes on. Can the Braves fill those holes? Certainly they can and it didn’t hurt to have the year like they had to help in recruiting, but keep in mind everyone else has made changes to better themselves and it’s always tougher the second time around. Now with that said do I think they can win the conference? Yes. Clarence Anderson is there, his brother Donald who is just as fast is there at Wide Receiver. Rashad Tucker is back at Running Back along with Robert Baer who had a fantastic freshman season. The defense still has pieces of the fastest and dare I say best Line Backing core in the KCAC returning. There is a lot to be positive about, but this is just serving as a warning that 11 and 1 may not be attainable this year, but it doesn’t mean they can’t return to the National Tournament.
In my next blog here on KCTeams.com I will talk a little bit about the broadcasts for this year’s Ottawa University Braves Football games and if there is time we’ll talk about some of the changes in the KCAC from last football season.
