OU Football Coverage Roundup

by: Bob Johnson

Welcome to my second blog here on KC Teams. I’m not the best at constantly updating, but I try. As promised I am going to talk about this year’s radio broadcast of Ottawa University Football. Some of you are going to say that there isn’t anything groundbreaking in this post and some of you may be excited, but I always want there to be one thing that is true with this blog and that’s honesty and transparency. Please don’t take this next comment out of context but sometimes honesty and transparency aren’t always welcomed in blogs by either the person that writes them or by companies etc. The people here on KCTeams and for the radio station I work for (KOFO) believe in those two values and you can always expect them here.
Now on to the blog. In year’s past we really haven’t had much of a pre-game show and when we did it was loosely put together (until last year and I really want to thank Derek Chappell for helping me with putting structure into the pre-game. This year though, I am really shooting for a more professional sounding and even better put together show (again thanks for Derek Chappell in helping to get things on track). First of all we will continue to have our 10 minute Coach Kessinger show, but this year we are going to really work on talking with the Defensive Coordinator Josh Holmoka and also with Wendell Smith. I am also going to try and work into the pregame show an interview with either current or past football players for Ottawa University. We’ll continue to have weather conditions and starters, but I am looking to offer more meat/content to give you the listener something to enjoy. I also want to give the O-U Football program from the coaches to the players something they can be proud of.
There won’t be too much of a change for half-time as we’ll continue to update everyone on the upcoming week’s events at Ottawa University and we’ll also discuss the first half of action. I would like to try and have an interview also if possible with higher ups at the university or maybe with other coaches. That’s just some ideas that are being toyed with right now for halftime.
The post game show will again see us talk with the coaches after the end of the ball game including Coach Kessinger, but we’ll also try to get some player reaction this year on a regular basis before the broadcast ends. We are also looking at having offensive and defensive players of the game. We are working on sponsorships for those and are wanting to even offer plaques to the players, but that is something that is being worked on right now and I will keep everyone posted on the outcome of this. I would also like to hear from you the listener/viewer after the game. Leave e-mails with questions and comments through the KC Teams website and I will do my best to get you answered back as soon as possible.
As far as the game itself. There won’t be much of a change. I’ll still be bringing you the play by play, but I am working on a couple of ideas for color commentators. I am looking at possible former Ottawa University Football players for this roll and I will reveal more once everything is concrete. Now will I be a homer? At times yes. Will I be honest? Yes. One thing people need to know is that you don’t have to be mean spirited to be honest. I think that people want to consider you a homer if you disagree with something or someone but you do it tactfully and with class. That’s not true. It takes a person to be more of a “man” to do things the right way than it is to just be controversial for the sake of controversy. You may not agree with everything I say or do during the broadcast, but know this, it’s honest and not just something to get a reaction.
In my next blog we’ll start to take a look at the KCAC Conference and some of the changes that have gone on since last season. Again thanks for taking the time to look and read and as always send me questions or comments as I read them all and try to respond to as many if not all of them as quickly as possible.

OU Braves Have Tough Task Ahead To Repeat

by: Bob Johnson

It seems like the Ottawa University Football season ended not too long ago and now we are just under two months away from training camps in the KCAC opening up.  What a season the Braves had and now the hard part…repeating.  Will they repeat their 11 and 1 mark from the 2009 campaign?  My answer to the question is probably not.  Does that mean they can’t do it again?  No.  What it does mean is that there’s a huge target on the back of the yellow and gold in the KCAC with two of the conference power houses also looking to find their way back to the top.

Let’s be honest, Friends was embarrassed on the last day of the regular season on their home turf by Ottawa University and the Braves exercised the demons at Sterling last season.  Both of those two teams expected to either be the conference champions or at least representing the KCAC in the NAIA playoffs last season.  Neither did.  It was O-U along with a surprising McPherson Bulldog team that went to the National Tournament.  What am I getting at?  It’s not going to be a cake walk as those two teams are looking to find their way back to the top.  Also add to that fact that the Braves will be without Ethan Haller who broke school records at quarterback, Corey Schultz who also set records at Wide Receiver, Tight End Taylor Burnett, Defensive End Jamison Shaw, Running Back Andy Otto and the list goes on.  Can the Braves fill those holes?  Certainly they can and it didn’t hurt to have the year like they had to help in recruiting, but keep in mind everyone else has made changes to better themselves and it’s always tougher the second time around.  Now with that said do I think they can win the conference?  Yes.  Clarence Anderson is there, his brother Donald who is just as fast is there at Wide Receiver.  Rashad Tucker is back at Running Back along with Robert Baer who had a fantastic freshman season.  The defense still has pieces of the fastest and dare I say best Line Backing core in the KCAC returning.  There is a lot to be positive about, but this is just serving as a warning that 11 and 1 may not be attainable this year, but it doesn’t mean they can’t return to the National Tournament.

In my next blog here on KCTeams.com I will talk a little bit about the broadcasts for this year’s Ottawa University Braves Football games and if there is time we’ll talk about some of the changes in the KCAC from last football season.
